Takes 1st Place at the Zebra Classic

Almaden Lightning 8U Gold team continued it's hot streak winning the 2012 Zebra Classic on the strength of outstanding defense and key contributions from the whole team. The Lightning’s route to the championship included a hard fought 1-0 walk-off win over Campbell Crush in the semi-finals and a 6-3 win in the championship game over an outstanding West Valley Slammers team. Special thanks to Branham Hills and the California Kryptonite for hosting a great tournament and congratulations to the Lightning girls.

After finishing 3rd in Livermore and in the Thunder Thriller, the 12UB Lightning captured the championship beating two strong opponents in HalfMoon Bay and Carmel All-Stars.

Wins the Bob Gray Classic!

The Almaden Lightning 8U Gold team won the Bob Gray Classic at Graystone Elementary, defeating the West Valley Slammers 1-0 in the Championship game.  Overall, the team went 7-0 through the 3 day tournament scoring 43 runs and not allowing a single run.   Every girl on the team contributed to the outstanding play on defense and offense. This is the first time Almaden has won the tournament in it's 5 years of hosting the 8U's. The 19 team tournament, one of the largest in the West, also received attention from the Mercury News.  Great job Lightning Girls!

Lightning 8U Blue Takes 2nd Place
in the Silver Bracket at 2012 Bob Gray Classic!

The Almaden Lightning 8U Blue team finishes 2nd in the Silver Bracket at the 2012 Bob Gray Classic!

The Lighting 8U Blue team played 5 games to get to the finals, winning 3, tying 1 and losing 1 before playing Campbell Crush in Sunday afternoon's final game. Pitchers Kylie McNight, Samantha Johannes, Mari Bajan, and Shelby Hood all pitched outstanding games, each with several strikeouts. Jordan Nolan made a stellar double play at first base on a pop fly catch. Zoe Miller caught 2 great pop flys from shortstop and prevented critical runs from scoring. Catchers Hannah Matus, Faith Fletcher and Meghan DeVaughn each made some fantastic plays from behind the plate, and second basemen Grace Gunter and Julia Bullock each helped make several outs during the weekend. Overall, the team scored 33 runs in the 6 game series. Congratulations to the whole team for an outstanding weekend!

1st Place Champions at Branham Hills Thriller!

 Lightning 12UC-Blair Take 1st Place in Branham Hills Thriller!

 The Almaden Lightning 12U "C" team won their second tournament of the summer last weekend, capturing the Branham Hills Thunder Thriller Tournament.  They defeated a tough Belmont Explosion team 9-5 in the championship game, one week after Belmont knocked Almaden out of the tournament in Morgan Hill.  The victory was another total team effort, with the bottom of the batting order providing some of the biggest, most timely hits in the final against Belmont, and in the semi-final win over San Ramon.  Marissa Gittelson went the distance for Almaden, pitching both the semi-final and the championship games on Sunday.  Congratulations to Julia, Grace S, Bella, Taylor, Daisy, Grace R, Ellie, Mouse, Marissa, and Lauryn.

Lightning Gold 8U Takes
1st Place In Livermore!

The Lightning Gold 8U girls beat the Livermore Smoke 2-1 in an action packed championship game. Kaci Bardel and Sydney Poole lead the Lightning with outstanding pitching. Emory Hansen scored the tying run in the bottom of the third on an triple by Erin Farnese. In the final inning, Lauren Fulton made an amazing catch in right field to save a run. Sophia Williams then lead off the Lightning with a triple down the first base line and scored on Taryn Kern's game winning hit. Overall the 8U Gold team finished 5-0 in Livermore and played outstanding softball. Great job girls!

1st Place Champions at Livermore!

Lightning 12UC-Blair Takes
1st Place in Livermore!

The Lightning 12UC-Blair team overcame all obstacles in the championship game against the Pleasanton Phantom on Sunday in Livermore, winning 11-10 in nine innings.  Almaden came back from 4-0 and 6-2 deficits to take the lead 7-6 in the 6th inning. The Pleasanton tied it in the bottom of the 7th, sending the game to 2 extra innings.  The entire contest was a struggle, as all the close calls and breaks seemed to go against Almaden for most of the game.  The victory took maximum effort from every member of the team: Marissa, Lauryn, Ellie, Grace R, Grace S, Alli, Julia, Mouse, Taylor, Gabi, and Daisy.  Congratulations girls!
