16U A TEAM TRYOUTS

NEW ALMADEN LIGHTNING 14U A-LEVEL TEAM

To all interested players and parents:

 In response to the local demand here in Almaden Valley and surrounding communities, AVGSL is now sponsoring a new 14U A competitive level girl’s softball team.  For many years, AVGSL has fielded some of the finest B-level travel teams in the area but until now has never had an A level program available for its local players.  This is a new program for AVGSL, and our program goals are as follows:

Players

The players on this team should be 8th Grade and High School level softball players.  Their birth date cannot be prior to January 1, 1998 to be eligible for this team.  Based on the team tryouts, performance history, and tournament conflicts, 12 to 14 girls will comprise this team.  Girls should be committed to playing a full practice and tournament schedule next Spring/Summer Starting in February 2013. 

Coaches

Marmet Williams will be the Head Coach.  Marmet Williams is an active Board Member and has several years experience coaching Travel Ball.  He has assembled a qualified staff and will do an excellent job leading this team.  We are excited to have him form this new venture for Almaden Lightning.  Our long term goal is to have a Paid non-parent Head Coach.  AVGSL is committed to a non-biased structure.  Our search has already begun and we expect to have a dedicated “paid” coach in place sometime during the spring/summer season.   

 Schedule for Spring/Summer

The schedule begins in early February.  We will begin concentrated practices and tournament schedule starting February 1st.  We will be playing in 2 to 3 tournaments per month through early August.  Our tournament selections will be based on the expected competitiveness of our team.  Our spring schedule will be lighter than our summer schedule, but fairly consistent with some weekends off in order to allow for some planned family travel time.  Some overnight travel should be expected.    

Philosophy

This team is expected to be a highly competitive middle tier A ball team.  College recruitment, showcase tournaments, and the emphasis on college scholarships will not be the major driver of this team.  This team will emphasize player development, playing time for all, fun on the field and off, and the commitment to get better and put forth the very best effort.  Winning is certainly an important element, but not at all cost.  The girls will be well respected and will learn good life skills while exhibiting good sportsmanship to their teammates, coaches, parent volunteers, and opponents.

Cost

The cost per player of this team will be determined by the following: 1) cost of uniforms, supplies and fields; 2) cost of tournaments; and 3) cost of coach, including travel expenses.  These costs will be equally divided by the number of players on the team.

Time: 1:00 – 2:00 pm for pitchers and catchers

          2:00 – 4:00 pm for all other position players

• The Almaden Lightning is a Competitive Girls Fastpitch Softball Summer and Fall Travel Organization under the Almaden Valley Girls Softball League, located in San Jose, CA.
• The Almaden Lightning is comprised of the very best players from the Almaden Valley Girls Softball League.
• The Summer season generally runs from Memorial Day weekend (end of May) through July. Practices may start sooner but will not conflict with player commitments to their current Spring teams.

• The Fall season generally runs from the beginning of September into Novemeber.
• Practice and game schedules vary by coach and division. Teams generally practice three days a week and play tournaments on the weekends. For Summer ball, most teams will play between 5-7 tournaments. The 8U will likely play 4-5 tournaments. For Fall ball, most teams will play 2-3 tournaments.
